About Me

Me pictured leading a tour to the Somme in 2006.
My name is Steve Smith and I was born in Kent. After I left school in 1985, I joined the Royal Air Force where I specialised as an RAF Police NCO and saw service in Cyprus, the Falklands, Northern Ireland and with NATO carrying out peace keeping duties in Macedonia in 2002. I left the RAF in 2003, after 18 years service.
I started guiding in my spare time in 2002 and decided that the best route to become a qualified guide was to follow the path to being badged with the Guild of Battlefield Guides. I conducted private and organised tours, having worked as a guide for Holts and Galina in the past. I qualified as a badged guide in April 2004.
I have been interested in military history since a very early age. The battlefields of the Western Front especially had a big impact upon me. I grew up in the East Kent town of Whitstable and first toured at the age of 13 when my family wanted to learn more about the death of my Great Grandfather, Frank Smith. Even then it was only sketchy what had happened to him. I have since learnt all there is to know about him and that is how I became to also be a professional researcher. I am now located in Norfolk, where I live with my family.
I have been helping people trace their ancestors for several years now and know how to search for them using the various resources I hold and know where to look in places such as the National Archives at Kew. It is my aim to keep the memory of those that fell during WWI and WWII alive and to share my passion and knowledge with others interested in discovering more about these harrowing times. So please take your time having a look at what I can offer you by clicking on the link below.
